〈Essex Dogs〉（埃塞克狗）大概是 Blur 最不討喜的歌之一（所以超讚）。
偶爾出現的旋律只是剛好，真正的主角是低吠的重低音和尖叫的高音，比起所謂的音樂，它們更讓人聯想到怎麼發都發不動的機車、辦公室裡的碎紙機，燙得要命卻吹不乾你頭髮的吹風機，以及在你午睡時刻施工的樓上鄰居。

「狗」的意象在 Blur 作品中已不是第一次出現。這首歌除了提及草坪上無聊的埃塞克狗，也讓我聯想到《Parklife》（公園人生）專輯封面上面目猙獰的狗。或許我們都是在草坪上翻著筋斗的狗、在賽道上供他人賭博娛樂的狗。

也有種說法，把歌名解釋為「埃塞克夏天」，認為狗字指的是夏天夜空上的天狼星。看歌詞，我不太確定這是不是一幅夏天場景，然而，這首歌蒸騰的低音確實讓我想起亞熱帶柏油城市過度炎熱、逼人發瘋的夏天。
